Elias Jarade
Elias F. Jarade is a graduate of Harvard Medical School with 2 fellowship certificates in cornea and refractive surgery from the Eye Center and Eye Foundation for Research, and The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He is heavily involved in the practice and research of cornea and refractive surgery and cornea transplant and has authored more than 50 scientific international peer-reviewed papers and chapters. Dr. Elias has performed over 10,000 refractive surgeries, created new methods of accurate corneal power measurement after LASIK surgery (Jarade’s formula), and has discovered and published a new treatment for a blinding complication after LASIK (Grade IV DLK). Additionally, Dr. Elias is also a pioneer in adult keratoconus treatment and was the first to describe keratoconus and treatment in pediatric patients, resulting in the publication of Dr. Jarade’s algorithm for the treatment of pediatric keratoconus. He founded the new concept of mathematical analysis of corneal remodeling and devised a new nomogram for ring implantation in keratoconus, which is considered the only complete internationally recognized treatment algorithm. Dr. Elias is also a pioneer in corneal transplant surgery and has published many new techniques in cornea transplantation to restore vision in chronically blinded eye and new corneal transplantation for keratoglobus and ocular surface reconstruction. Dr. Elias’ current research interests are focused on the development of new surgical treatment of keratoconus, a new filtering procedure for glaucoma management, a leading role in the new treatment protocol for retinitis pigementosa, and a particular interest in the role of tear film in the development of special ocular surface diseases. He is an International Board Member for the Journal of Refractive Surgery, Founder of the Emirates Cornea and Refractive Surgery (ECRS) club, Ambassador and regional representative of the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS), expert board member of the International Journal of Ophthalmology, guest editor for a special issue of the Journal of Ophthalmology (current concept in corneal collagen crosslinking), lead guest editor for a special issue of Bio Med Journal (New treatment modalities for the treatment of keratoconus, and maintains membership on the International Advisory Board for the Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology.
