Enesa Begovic
Dr. Enesa Begovi is an ophthalmologist, with over two decades of specialized expertise to the field of eye care. Currently serving as the owner and lead specialist at her private practice "Lacrima" in Sarajevo, as well as working as an ophthalmologist consultant in the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Kanton Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Dr. Begovi has dedicated her career to advancing ophthalmological care with particular focus on ocular surface diseases, retinal disorders, and comprehensive patient care. Dr. Begovi?'s journey in medicine began at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, where she earned her Doctor of Medicine degree in 2001. Following her graduation, she completed her internship at the Health Center and General Hospital in Bijelo Polje, Montenegro, before pursuing specialized training at the prestigious Clinic for Eye Diseases at the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo from 2003 to 2006. Her commitment to continuous learning led her to complete comprehensive healthcare management and earn a qualification of a Level 3 (highest level) Manager, through the Federal Ministry of Health of BiH and multiple Faculties of Economics in 2017.
Throughout her career, Dr. Begovi? had an opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills and clinical expertise across various healthcare settings. Her professional journey includes positions at renowned institutions, beginning with her early work at the Ophthalmological Practice of Prim.dr. Suvad Kar?i?, followed by roles at Polyclinic "Sunce-AGRAM," and a decade-long tenure at private eye clinic "Oko" Dr. Kar?i?, where she served not only as a specialist but also as director.
Dr. Begovi?'s areas of specialization encompass the full spectrum of ophthalmological care, with expertise in diseases of the ocular surface and dry eye conditions, retinal disorders including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, and advanced therapeutic interventions such as intravitreal anti-VEGF injections. Her clinical proficiency extends to forensic medical expertise in ophthalmology and comprehensive perioperative patient care, making her a versatile practitioner capable of addressing complex ophthalmological challenges.
As a member of the Medical Chamber of Sarajevo Canton and the Association of Healthcare Institutions and Employees in Private Practice, she maintains professional connections within Bosnia and Herzegovina. Internationally, she served as the global ambassador for Bosnia and Herzegovina for the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) from 2018. During her service with TFOS, Dr. Begovi? was actively involved in the preparation of the publication “TFOS European Ambassador meeting: Unmet Needs and Future Scientific and Clinical Solutions for Ocular Surface Diseases,” which was published in the journal “The Ocular Surface” in 2020. She regularly worked on promoting and raising awareness of ocular surface disease both among professional colleagues and the public through various media – an effort that was particularly visible while she served on the Public Awareness committee, which aimed to disseminate the report “Lifestyle Epidemic: Ocular Surface Disease”. She participated in three conferences organized by TFOS. Through a special interest in the work of EURETINA, of which she is a full member, she pursued further training in retinal diseases, contributing to better understanding and treatment of patients with these conditions.
She has authored and co-authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations, covering topics ranging from diabetic retinopathy and anti-VEGF therapy to ocular surface diseases and pediatric ophthalmology. Her research has been presented at major international conferences across Europe, Turkey, and Central Asia, including the European Tear Film Ocular Society meetings, Turkish Ophthalmology Society annual meetings, and various Balkan and Southeast European ophthalmological congresses.
In recognition of her contributions to medicine and healthcare leadership, Dr. Begovi? was awarded the prestigious title of “Primarijus” (chief physician) by the Federal Ministry of Health of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in April 2020.
Currently, Dr. Begovi? continues to expand her impact through her private practice and consulting services, where she provides specialized ophthalmological care while maintaining her commitment to prevention of eye diseases, research, education, and professional development.
She enjoys spending time with her three sons, who are studying abroad. She is also committed to healthy lifestyles, which she maintains through regular training (yoga, mountaineering, skiing). Her artistic interests include active participation in the interreligious choir “KUD Lola”, as well as reading, watching films, and attending theatre productions.
