Ernesto Otero
Ernesto J. Otero, MD, is a Professor of Ophthalmology in the Anterior Segment, Cornea, and Refractive Surgery at the Superior School of Ophthalmology–Barraquer Institute of America and has been a faculty member at the Barraquer Clinic in Bogotá, Colombia, since 2003. With over 20 years of professional experience, Dr. Otero has dedicated himself to studying and treating diseases affecting the anterior segment of the eye, the cornea, and refractive errors. He is the Vice President of the Latin American Society of Anterior Segment and Cataract Surgeons (ALACCSA) and a former President of the Colombian Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASOCYR). Member of the board of the PanAmerican Cornea Society (Pancornea). He serves on the editorial board of Em-Foco (Journal of the Brazilian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery–BRASCRS) and has been Guest Section Editor of Current Ophthalmology Reports. Additionally, he is the Medical Director of the Colombian Eye-Bank Corporation (COBANCOL) since 2003, a Board Member of Oftalmos SA, and a Board Member of the Barraquer Institute of America and the educational board of the Superior School of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Otero earned his medical degree from Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Superior School of Ophthalmology–Barraquer Institute of America. He then pursued a fellowship in the anterior segment, cornea, and refractive surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Carmen Barraquer. Dr. Otero continued his training in New York, completing a second fellowship at the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital and cataract and cornea training with Dr. Jack Dodick and Dr. Richard Gibraltár. He worked as an associate at New York Eye Specialists until 2003, after which he returned to Colombia to join the Barraquer Clinic as a faculty member.
Dr. Otero is a member of various professional societies in Colombia and abroad. He is a renowned lecturer at national and international conferences and has authored several scienti?c papers. Additionally, he has served as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals.
