Dr Fatima Iqbal OD, PhD, FAAO, Dip AAO is an optometrist, educator, and ocular surface scientist whose work bridges clinical practice, advanced analytics, and global health. Originally trained in Pakistan and now based in Australia, she brings a deeply personal commitment to improving eye care standards across diverse and often under-resourced communities. Much of her academic journey is shaped by her early clinical and teaching experiences in Pakistan, which fuel her passion for strengthening training pathways, research capacity, and evidence-based optometry in the region.
Dr Iqbal completed her PhD at the School of Optometry & Vision Science, UNSW Sydney, specialising in meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), multimodal meibography, and biochemical profiling of meibum using proteomics and lipidomics. Her research integrates anterior segment OCT, infrared meibography, tear film diagnostics, and molecular characterisation to unravel the structural and functional complexities of the ocular surface. She remains actively engaged in translational research, including clinical trials, periocular microbiome studies, and predictive modelling of tear film and MGD-related changes.
In parallel with her research, Dr Iqbal is an early-career academic with extensive teaching experience in both Pakistan and Australia. She remains strongly connected to her alma mater and continues to collaborate with institutions in Pakistan to support academic development, mentorship, and the next generation of optometrists.
In 2025, she became the first Diplomate in Optometric Education from outside North America—and the first female Diplomate from Pakistan through the American Academy of Optometry, recognising her global leadership and pioneering contributions to optometry education.
As a TFOS Global Ambassador, Dr Iqbal advocates for robust, evidence-based understanding of the tear film and ocular surface and is passionate about facilitating collaboration between researchers in Australia, Pakistan, and beyond. Her mission is to translate emerging ocular surface science into accessible, high-quality patient care, particularly in regions where eye care services continue to evolve.
Outside her professional life, Fatima is a proud mother of twins, and her personal journey reinforces her empathy, resilience, and commitment to meaningful, real-world impact in eye health.
