Prof Giuseppe Giannaccare is an Italian Ophthalmologist who graduated in Medicine and Surgery with full marks and honors at the University Campus Biomedico of Rome (Italy) in 2009. He completed the residency program in Ophthalmology at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna (Italy) with full marks and honors in 2015. At the same University he carried out a PhD in Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences completed in 2017, discussing a thesis on ocular graft versus-host disease. His academic career started in 2017 at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna as Researcher. In 2019 he became Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro (Italy). Since 2023, he is Full Professor of Ophthalmology, Chairman of University Eye Clinic and Director of Ophthalmology Residency Program at the University of Cagliari (Italy). He is the author of 316 publications indexed in Scopus (H index 42; total citations = 5342). He has received numerous national and international awards, including, among others, the Scientific Research Award of the Italian Ophthalmological Society in 2018 (funding of 25,000 €) and the Guinness World Records for having taken part as co-author at the greatest scientific work in terms of collaborators (n = 15,025). Principal Investigator for the following projects funded by the Italian Minister of University and Research (PRIN): 1) “Development and validation of an Integrated riSk prediction model for COrneal graft survival following endothelial keRatoplasty: an artificial intelligence based approach (DISCOVER)” (PRIN 2022) (total budget 115,355.00 €); 2) "Pilot study testing a hybrid intra-corneal prosthesis with dehydrated corneal tissue scaffold for the treatment of corneal blindness (INTRAKER) (PRIN-PNRR 2022) (total budget 226,791.00 €); 3) “New therapeutic tools to prevent diabetic retinopathy” (PRIN 2017) (112,701.00 €). Principal Investigator for the project funded by the Italian Minister of Health: “Feasibility of Prefabricated Corneal Scaffold for the Transmission of Images Through an Optical Device” founded by the Italian Minister of Health (PNRR-POC-2022-12376494) (total budget 989,050.00 €). From 2015 to 2017 he served as Directive Board Member for the Young Ophthalmologists at the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) and currently he is the National Representative for Italy. Since 2019 he is Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO), and since 2023 Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences (FWCRS). From 2018 to 2019 he served as Scientific Committee Member of Italian Society of Corneal Transplantation and Ocular Surface (SITRAC), and from 2019 to 2023 as Directive Board Member for the same Society. Since 2024 he is Italian Ambassador for Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) and for European Association for Vision and Eye Research (EVER).
Prof. Giannaccare is Section Editor (Cornea) for Eye Journal (Nature group), Section Editor (Ophthalmology) for International Medical Case Reports Journal (Dove Press group), Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports (Nature group) and Advisory Board Member for Ophthalmology and Therapy (Springer group).
The main research areas concern medical and surgical pathologies of cornea and ocular surface. He co-authored the “TFOS Lifestyle Report: Impact of environmental conditions on the ocular surface”, published in Ocular Surface journal in 2023. He is listed in the TFOS Collaborator group in the “TFOS DEWS III: Management and Therapy”, published in American Journal of Ophthalmology in 2025.
