Guillermo Vera-Duarte
Dr. Guillermo Raúl Vera-Duarte completed his Ophthalmology residency at the Cátedra de Oftalmología, Universidad Nacional de Asunción (UNA) in Paraguay, and his fellowship training in Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery at the Instituto de Oftalmología Fundación Conde de Valenciana in Mexico City, one of the leading referral and academic centers in Latin America. He earned his medical degree from Universidad Nacional de Asunción, where he began his early clinical and research involvement in anterior segment and ocular surface disorders. Dr. Vera-Duarte currently serves as Deputy Director and member of the Research Department at Oftalmosalud Eye Institute in Lima, Peru. He is also an Assistant Tutor at the Cátedra de Oftalmología of Universidad Nacional de Asunción and collaborates with the Fundación Banco de Ojos Oca del Valle. His main areas of clinical and academic interest include corneal transplantation, ocular surface disease, and refractive surgery, with a particular focus on dry eye disease, neurotrophic keratopathy, allergic keratoconjunctivitis, keratoconus, and anterior segment surgical innovation. His work integrates clinical and translational research, emphasizing personalized approaches and optimizing diagnostic and surgical techniques. He has co-authored several peer-reviewed publications and review articles in international journals, including studies on corneal neurotization, immunomodulatory therapies for ocular surface inflammation, limbal stem cell deficiency, and intraocular lens power calculation after refractive surgery. Dr. Vera-Duarte also participates in multicenter collaborations across Latin America, aiming to strengthen regional research capacity and promote standardized clinical protocols for ocular surface disease. In addition to his clinical and research work, he is deeply involved in resident education, curriculum development, and academic mentorship in cornea and refractive surgery. He frequently participates as a lecturer and panelist in national and international ophthalmology meetings.
