Juan Carlos Abad
Juan Carlos Abad earned his medical degree from CES University located in his hometown of Medellin, Colombia. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. (US), and a two-year Clinical Cornea and External Diseases fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, where he introduced alcohol-assisted PRK, and performed the first LASEK procedures in the world. Dr. Abad’s medical interests include infectious ocular conditions, novel keratoconus topographic patterns, hyperopic keratoconus, the use of short intracorneal ring segments for enhancing the treatment of astigmatism in keratoconus, and unusual complications of corneal cross-linking. He is active on the ocular surface front having tested a multipronged approach to keratoprosthesis surgery, which improved current results. Dr. Abad is the Vice-President of the revamped Panamerican Cornea Society, a branch of the PAAO, and owns a private practice in Medellin, Colombia, which contains a center for excellence in dry eye diagnosis and therapy where he continues to do clinical research, lecturing locally and internationally, while also enjoying time with his family.
