Priv.-Doz. Dr. Jutta Horwath-Winter is a senior consultant at the University Eye Clinic Graz and is affiliated with the Medical University of Graz, Austria. She heads the Specialized Unit for Ocular Surface and Tear Film Disorders, the Corneal Outpatient Clinic, and the Tissue Procurement Facility at the University Eye Hospital Graz.
Her clinical and research expertise focuses on diseases of the ocular surface, eyelids, and tear film, with particular emphasis on dry eye disease and its multifactorial pathophysiology. For her early work on environmental influences in the development of dry eye, she received the Sicca Research Prize from the German Ophthalmologists’ Association. She has since remained continuously active in academic publishing and international research collaboration.
In 2005, Dr. Horwath-Winter completed her habilitation (post-doctoral qualification for independent teaching and research) at the Medical University of Graz.
She is an experienced anterior segment surgeon, surgical coordinator, and principal investigator in numerous clinical studies.
Dr. Horwath-Winter established and currently chairs the Commission for Dry Eye and Ocular Surface Diseases within the Austrian Ophthalmological Society, promoting national cooperation and advancing clinical standards in this field. She is an active member of several national and international ophthalmological societies and contributes regularly to international expert panels and workshops, including TFOS DEWS II, TFOS DEWS III, and TFOS Lifestyle.
Her work integrates clinical excellence, translational research, and patient-centered care, with the overarching goal of improving diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for ocular surface diseases.
