Mamunur Rashid
Dr. A.K.M. Mamunur Rashid, MBBS, DO, MPHO, is a senior ophthalmologist and dry eye specialist from Bangladesh with more than four decades of experience in clinical ophthalmology, community eye health, and the development of sustainable eye-care services.
He began his community eye-care work in 1978 and has since helped deliver ophthalmic services to underserved and remote populations, including cataract surgery, the establishment of community-based eye-care centres, and the development of a floating eye hospital.
Dr. Rashid’s clinical interests include dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and practical, affordable approaches to managing ocular-surface disease in resource-limited settings. His current practice focuses on comprehensive dry-eye assessment and management, including MGD-directed therapies, thermal treatment, eyelid hygiene, and meibomian gland care. In parallel, he is engaged in clinical research examining cost-effective treatment strategies that can be adapted to the needs of patients in South Asia.
His academic and professional collaborations have included work with the Singapore Eye Research Institute, including joint research with Professor Louis Tong on the prevalence of dry eye disease among garment workers in Bangladesh, which resulted in peer-reviewed publications. He has also made extensive contributions to ophthalmic education and professional training, with expertise in community ophthalmology, health-systems development, clinical audit, and the training of ophthalmic personnel.
As a TFOS Ambassador for Bangladesh, Dr. Rashid is committed to advancing awareness, education, research, and evidence-based management of ocular-surface disease and dry eye disease. He also works to strengthen communication and collaboration among Bangladeshi eye-care professionals and the international dry eye community.
