Obinwanne Chukwiemeka, Jr
Dr Obinwanne Chukwuemeka Junior, is a clinician scientist with special interests in cornea, contact lens, ocular surface and myopia. He heads of the Cornea, contact lens and myopia management department at De Lens Ophthalmics Family Eye and Vision Care center, Abuja, Nigeria, a multi-specialty eye care facility. He is also an Adjunct lecturer at the School of Optometry and Vision Science (SoVS), University of Cape Coast, Ghana.
He received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Benin, Benin City in 2012 and completed a 2-year fellowship in Cornea, specialty contact lenses and anterior segment from the prestigious LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India between 2016 to 2018. He holds a masters in research optometry from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa where his research focus was on ocular biometry and sub-foveal choroidal thickness changes in school aged children with myopia.
He is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, and is the first African to become a Diplomate of the Cornea, Contact Lenses and Refractive Technologies (CCLRT) section of the American Academy of Optometry. He is also the first West African to become a fellow of the Scleral Lens Education Society, USA. Dr Obinwanne is an ambassador for the Tear Film Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) to Nigeria and served on the societal challenges committee of the TFOS’s Ocular surface disease: A Lifestyle Epidermic workshop held in Sicily, Italy in 2022.
He has served in the cornea techniques sub-committee for the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA): CLEAR Presbyopia reports. He served in the American Academy of Optometry-Cochrane Eye Vision research groups (AAO-CEV) on ocular surface and optical interventions for presbyopia. He is a certified myopia management expert. Dr Obinwanne holds certifications and has experience in fitting specialty and medically necessary contact lenses.
He serves on the Advisory board of the Global Myopia Awareness Coalition (GMAC) and is a member of the International Myopia Institute (IMI) and the International Association of Contact Lens Educators (IACLE).
Dr Obinwanne’s interests includes cornea and anterior segment diseases, keratoconus, childhood myopia, specialty contact lenses, and the ocular surface.
He is involved in several clinical research projects focused on scleral lenses, keratoconus, childhood myopia, contact lenses, ocular surface disease and cornea. He has several peer reviewed publications to his name. Dr. Obinwanne is also involved in intra and inter-professional educational programs locally and internationally.
