Tais Hitomi Wakamatsu

Dr. Tais is a Brazilian ophthalmologist specializing in cornea, ocular surface diseases, and dry eye, with a long-standing commitment to patient care, education, and scientific advancement. She completed her medical degree at the University of São Paulo (USP–Ribeirão Preto), followed by a residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), a PhD at Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo with a MEXT scholarship under the supervision of Prof. Kazuo Tsubota, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), where she also served as a visiting professor. Her clinical and research interests include inflammatory and immune-mediated ocular surface diseases, dry eye disease, confocal microscopy, meibomian gland dysfunction, SJS/TEN ocular sequelae, oxidative stress, and the translational application of imaging biomarkers in clinical practice.
As an active member of the international ocular surface community, Dr. Wakamatsu has contributed to scientific publications, educational initiatives, and collaborative projects that aim to expand understanding and improve care for patients with dry eye disease. She currently serves as the President of the Brazilian Dry Eye Association (APOS), leading nationwide awareness and diagnostic campaigns, public education initiatives, and partnerships with clinicians across the country. As a TFOS Ambassador for Brazil, she is committed to disseminating high-quality scientific evidence, promoting global-standard diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, and fostering collaborative opportunities between Brazilian clinicians, researchers, and the international TFOS community.
