Virender S Sangwan
Virender Singh Sangwan is a well-known ophthalmic surgeon of international repute, a researcher par excellence, a teacher and a marathon runner, and wears many hats. He is most recognized for the limbal stem cell culturing procedure he invented and for his innovative surgical techniques. He has restored vision to 800+ patients, whose eyesight was lost due to burns and damage of the outer ocular surface. Dr. Sangwan’s other areas of specialization include corneal diseases, ocular surface disorders, cataract surgery, uveitis and ocular allergy. Popular among his patients and peers alike, and what is admirable about him is his spirit of innovation, his ability to realize the implications of a development in basic biology, and willingness to adapt and apply it to the clinical situation and obtain results. Dr. Virender Sangwan handles multiple roles at the world-renowned L V Prasad Eye Institute at Hyderabad, India and is currently the Director for the Center for Ocular Regeneration (CORE) and Srujana Center for Innovation, Dr. Paul Dubord Chair in Cornea, and Consultant, Cornea and Anterior Segment, Ocular Immunology & Uveitis Services. Additionally, he is Adjunct Professor at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio and the Adjunct Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Rochester Medical Center. He is the Founder Secretary of the Asia Cornea Society, Uveitis Society of India, and LVPEI Alumni Association of Ophthalmologists. Professor Sangwan is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Medical Sciences (2006), National Technology Award (2007), and Sun Pharma Science Award for medical research (2016). He was ranked in the top 10 medical researchers in India by a study conducted by the Department of Science and Technology in 2015. Dr. Sangwan widely published in peer-reviewed journals and has over 200 publications to his credit. He has served as faculty for national and international workshops and instruction courses on uveitis, limbal stem cell deficiency and limbal stem cell transplantation. He is also the reviewer for the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, Cornea, Comprehensive Ophthalmology Update and Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology. Dr. Sangwan is an avid runner, believing that it nourishes his mind, body and soul, and he loves listening to music and TED talks, and has a simple life credo – take things as they come!
